Your Questions About Running Injury Calf http://bit.ly/tybaMF

William asks…

Running injury to calf?

I think I might have pulled my gastrocnemius muscle on the inside of my calf on the right leg while running up a hill 3-4 weeks ago. The muscle feels kind of swollen/ hard. I have been stretching it but it does not seem to be any better. I there anything I can try before going to see a doctor? Is there anything else it might be other than a pulled muscle?

Thanks for you advice!!!

Just rest, don't strain it any more then you have. I went for a seven mile run yesterday and my butt hurts so much.

Betty asks…

running injury?

I have been running alot and racing. My calves, shin, ankle, hip, knee all hurt what should i do? I can barely jog and need a quick fix. DO i jump in freezing water. Overall everything hurt below my waist?

Well you must be doing a lot of running for all of those parts to hurt! It sounds to me like you have either neglected stretching or have improperly stretched prior to running. You need to make sure you are doing some dynamic stretches before and after you run. Check out this great site on sports injury prevention. I have included a link specifically related to running.

Also, to treat your current pain I would recommend the R.I.C.E.R regime. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and Referral to a doctor if the pain persists.

I hope this helps and best of luck! Remember to do proper stretching BEFORE and AFTER running!

Steven asks…

Got Calf Strain In Running?

i got calf strain (obviously in running) and i don't know what grade my calf strain is, its been 1 month and i was thinking maybe if i could go swimming or cycling rather than running, the injury needs rest that's why i won't be able to run or jog.. is it okay to perform these activities while having an injury (calf strain) ? thanks

admin answers:

I would say that a month is a pretty long time to have an injury like that, ive had broken bones that healed quicker. If you are continuously straining it i guess i see how you could still have it after that amount of time. In swimming you dont use your calfs so you can do that. While riding your bike you also done use your calfs but you do if you put your toe on the pedal, so try putting the middle of your foot or your heel on it. I would also suggest you see a physical therapist and not put off doing that because you will regret not getting it checked out. They should be able to help you pretty well. Good luck with getting better
